The 96,820 sq ft. William H. Grigg Hall is home to the Department of Physics and Optical Science, the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications, the interdisciplinary Optical Science & Engineering Ph.D. program and the Charlotte Research Institute. The building provides offices and laboratories for students, faculty and industrial partners who share research interests, specifically those in physics, optical science, optoelectronics, and optical communications. The building is named in honor of Duke Energy Chairman Emeritus William H. Grigg, who served the company with distinction for nearly 35 years prior to his retirement as chairman and chief executive officer in 1997. Grigg Hall contains an array of sophisticated equipment, including a scanned probe microscope system, a scanning near-field microscope, a scanning electron microscope and an x-ray interferometer test stand for optical metrology. Other key equipment include tunable communication laser systems and fiber fusion splicing systems for optical communications.
